ChatGPT alternatives in 2026: what to pick when you need the work done, not a chat

If you want ChatGPT-style answers for free, Claude and Gemini now give a lot on their free plans, and DeepSeek costs nothing at all. If you need the work itself done, a file to open, a reminder that arrives on time, a rule remembered next week, the list gets shorter: scheduled tasks sit behind a paid plan at ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity. We make one of the options, WAM Agents, so we ran five such tasks on our own agent and read everyone else’s official pages on 29 October 2026.

The short version
- WAM Agents: the result should arrive in Telegram as a file, a chart or a reminder, and the agent should remember your rules. Free to start, $13.90 for Pro.
- Claude: you want the strongest free plan. It already searches, creates files, runs code and remembers you. Scheduled tasks start at Pro, $20 a month.
- Gemini: your life runs on Gmail, Docs and Drive. Deep Research is free, and AI Plus at $4.99 is the cheapest paid plan here.
- Perplexity: you need answers with sources first. The part that does the work, Computer, comes with Pro.
- DeepSeek: you want a strong model for free and nothing else. For long tasks there is its desktop app.
- ChatGPT Go: you want to stay with OpenAI. $8 a month adds scheduled tasks.
WAM Agents is set up to your tasks. Research, files, code, charts, memory and one-off reminders work from the first message on Free. On Pro the agent also repeats reminders and runs tasks on a schedule. Mail and calendar go through Google once you connect it in the chat; anything else is a skill you add through MCP. The agent starts in Telegram and can connect to other messengers.
All six start free; scheduling is where plans differ
| Service | Free plan | Cheapest paid plan |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | GPT-6, limited memory and uploads | Go, $8 |
| Claude | search, files, code, memory | Pro, $20 ($17 yearly) |
| Gemini | Deep Research, Canvas | AI Plus, $4.99 |
| Perplexity | basic search, 3 Pro searches a day | Pro, $17 billed yearly |
| DeepSeek | the whole app | free |
| WAM Agents | 200 , then 100 a month | Pro, $13.90 |
Prices are in US dollars as listed on 29 October 2026; Google shows local prices, so in the UK the same AI Pro plan is £18.99. Free plans are no longer thin. Claude’s free tier lists web search, file creation, code execution, memory across conversations and connectors to your apps. ChatGPT Free has unlimited text chats with GPT-6, with memory, uploads and deep research limited.
The line between a chat and an executor is the schedule. ChatGPT’s comparison table marks scheduled tasks “No” on Free and “Yes” from Go. Claude puts “Hand off and schedule tasks” on Pro. Perplexity keeps scheduled tasks inside Computer, for Pro and Max. Google gives Ultra subscribers first access to Tasks in Gemini, in select countries.
Who does what without paying
| Task | Free plan | Needs a paid plan |
|---|---|---|
| Research with links | all six | not needed |
| A file you download | Claude, WAM Agents | Perplexity Pro; ChatGPT Work beyond the free desktop limit |
| Memory across chats | Claude, WAM Agents; ChatGPT, limited | more memory on paid ChatGPT and Perplexity |
| A one-off reminder | WAM Agents | ChatGPT Go, Claude Pro, Perplexity Pro |
| A recurring schedule | paid plans only | ChatGPT Go, Claude Pro, Perplexity Pro, Gemini Ultra, WAM Agents Pro |
This table is built from each company’s pricing and help pages. Where a page says nothing about a feature, the service isn’t listed in that row. DeepSeek is an example: its pages describe a free chat with web search, file upload and text extraction, and say nothing about scheduling.
Five tasks on our own agent
On 29 October I sent five tasks, one message each, to a WAM agent our team works with, on the default model. Replies are quoted as sent and shortened where they ran long. For the memory test, the rule went in first and the question came 26 minutes and four other tasks later.
| Task | Result | Reply in |
|---|---|---|
| Compare three tools’ prices, with links | done, with links to all three pages | 46 s |
| An Excel file that splits trip costs, with formulas | done | 1 min 55 s |
| Monthly growth and a line chart | done, figures correct | 33 s |
| A reminder in 3 minutes | arrived after 3 min 3 s | 7 s to set |
| Recall the invoice rules from earlier | done, all three rules recalled | 8 s |
Research with links
We opened the three pages afterwards. Trello’s $5 and $6 and the 10-board limit are right, and so are Asana’s $10.99, $13.49 and the two seats on its free plan. Linear’s free plan does stop at 250 issues and two teams. A tip for comparisons like this: when your choice hinges on one limit, ask the agent to quote that line from the pricing page word for word, so the source sits right next to the conclusion.
An Excel file with formulas
The file is a real spreadsheet, not a picture of one. Shares are ROUND formulas, each person’s total is a SUMIF over the “Paid by” column, and the second sheet works out the payments from those balances. Change Ben’s fuel to 120 and both payments move.
Numbers and a chart
The message held ten monthly sales figures. The agent calculated growth for each month, named October the best month at €5,720, 20.9% above the €4,732 average, and February the weakest. It also noted that the September jump of 27.8% starts from a low August. Then it sent the chart below. We checked all nine growth figures and the average: they are correct.

A reminder that arrives on its own
The second message is the point of this test. Nobody asked for it: the agent wrote first, at the time it promised. One-off reminders like this work on Free; on Pro the agent also repeats a reminder every week, for example every Monday.
A rule remembered later
All three rules came back, 26 minutes and four other tasks later. The agent also remembered the open question about the file name, asked it again and offered to check the file before it goes out. If the date matters, ask it to remind you the day before: one message, and the agent writes first.
What tasks like these cost: the published rates put a web search at 1.5 and 20,000 tokens of text on the default model at 1 .
The other five: what their own pages say
We didn’t run these services. Everything below comes from their official pricing, product and help pages, read on 29 October 2026.
ChatGPT is the baseline. The free plan gives unlimited text chats with GPT-6 and limited memory, uploads, deep research and ChatGPT Work on desktop. Go at $8 adds scheduled tasks and longer memory, and “may include ads”. Plus at $20 adds the advanced reasoning models; Pro from $100 adds Dot, OpenAI’s always-on agent. The head-to-head is in WAM Agents vs ChatGPT.
Claude has the fullest free plan of the five. Anthropic’s pricing page lists web search, file creation, code execution, memory and connectors on Free. Pro at $20 a month, or $17 billed yearly, adds “Hand off and schedule tasks” and Claude Code. Max starts at $100. At the top of the page, Anthropic says Claude Cowork “is now just Claude”, rolling out to Pro and Max.
Gemini gives Deep Research, Canvas and its Flash-Lite model for free, plus 15 GB of storage. In the US, AI Plus costs $4.99 and AI Pro $19.99 with Gemini 4 Argon and 5 TB; Ultra starts at $99.99 and gets first access to Tasks in Gemini and Agent Mode. Google’s footnote says usage limits refresh every five hours up to a weekly limit.
Perplexity is built around answers with sources. The free plan gives practically unlimited basic searches, 3 Pro searches a day and one research query a month. Pro, $17 a month billed yearly, opens Computer, which Perplexity calls “a general-purpose digital worker”: it browses, creates files and apps, connects Gmail, Slack, Notion and Calendar, and runs scheduled tasks. Max is $167 a month billed yearly.
DeepSeek is free. Its download page says the app lets you “chat with leading AI models for free”, and the October model update, V4.1 Flash, is live on the website, app and API. For longer work there is DeepSeek Harness, a desktop app that edits local files and runs tasks in the background. DeepSeek is also the default model behind WAM agents.
Personal agents that shop and book, such as Muse, Duet and Dots, are covered in Seven personal AI agents, and how ours did on the same errands.
Where the result lands
With ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and DeepSeek, the work lives in their app or browser tab, and you open it there. A WAM agent is a contact in Telegram. The spreadsheet above arrived as a file in the chat, the chart as a picture, and the reminder as a message that buzzed the phone at 15:01.
The same agent works in groups and forum topics: add it to a project chat and it answers when someone mentions it, with a separate memory for each topic. Forward it a PDF, a voice note or a screenshot, and it reads them in the same thread. For more on this, see Telegram AI bot: 10 tasks an agent does right in the chat.
What the paid plans add
| Plan | Per month | What it adds for real work |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Go | $8 | scheduled tasks, longer memory |
| Claude Pro | $20 | scheduled tasks, Claude Code |
| Gemini AI Pro | $19.99 | Gemini 4 Argon, 5 TB of storage |
| Perplexity Pro | $17 billed yearly | Computer with connectors and schedules |
| WAM Agents Pro | $13.90 | 400 , recurring reminders, scheduled tasks, your own model |
WAM’s Free plan gives 200 in the first month, then 100 a month, no card. Pro is $13.90 a month, or $1.39 for the first month if you subscribe within your first 7 days. On Pro you can also attach Claude or Codex on your own subscription; that work is billed by the provider, not in magnets. The full rate card is on the pricing page.
Which one to choose
Choose Claude if you want one free tool that writes, codes and makes files. Choose Gemini if Google already holds your mail and documents. Choose Perplexity if every answer needs a source you can click. Choose DeepSeek if you want a strong free chat and nothing more. Stay on ChatGPT Go if you like ChatGPT and only miss the schedule.
Choose WAM Agents if the work should come back to Telegram as a file, a chart or a message on time, if the agent should remember your rules between conversations, or if it should sit in a group with your team. Pick a name and an avatar in the bot, and the agent is ready in about a minute.
Try it with your own agent
Free, no card. The agent starts working in the chat straight away.

What is the best free ChatGPT alternative in 2026?
It depends on the job. If the work should arrive in Telegram as a file, a chart or a reminder, and the agent should remember your rules, WAM Agents on Free: 200 in the first month, then 100 a month, no card. For chat and documents, Claude’s free plan: on 29 October 2026 it searched the web, created files, ran code and kept memory across conversations. For research with sources, Perplexity.
Which ChatGPT alternative can run tasks on a schedule?
ChatGPT itself from Go ($8), Claude from Pro ($20), Perplexity through Computer on Pro, Gemini first on Ultra in select countries. WAM Agents sets one-off reminders on Free, and on Pro ($13.90) it repeats reminders and runs tasks on a schedule.
Is DeepSeek a good ChatGPT alternative?
As a free chat, yes: DeepSeek’s app is free and runs its latest model. Its pages describe chat, web search and file reading; for long tasks on your computer DeepSeek offers a separate desktop app, Harness. WAM agents run on DeepSeek by default and add files, reminders and memory in Telegram.
Did you test Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and DeepSeek yourselves?
No. We ran five tasks on our own agent only. For the other services we used their official pricing and help pages, read on 29 October 2026, and link to each one.
Can WAM Agents use Claude or ChatGPT models?
Yes, on Pro. DeepSeek is the default on every plan; on Pro you can attach Claude with /claude or Codex on your ChatGPT subscription with /codex, and the provider bills that work to your own subscription.
