Twelve things to ask an AI about a PDF

Published 23 October 2026 · 3 min read

“Summarise this” is the weakest request you can send with a document. The agent reads PDF, DOCX and TXT files itself, so the useful part is what you ask for. Twelve requests below, grouped by what you want back. Copy one, forward your file, paste.

Read it for me

The one-paragraph version

For a report you will not read but have to discuss.

Summarise this in one paragraph for someone who has five minutes before the meeting.

Chapter by chapter

A large document is read in parts. When completeness matters, ask for it section by section.

Go chapter by chapter: three lines each, with page numbers.

One question, with a quote

Insurance policies, terms of service, manuals.

Does this policy cover water damage from a neighbour’s flat? Quote the paragraph and give the page.

Jargon in plain words

For legal, medical or technical papers outside your field.

List the terms a non-lawyer wouldn’t know and explain each in one sentence.

Pull things out

Every figure, with its page

Board packs, annual reports, research papers. The agent can send the result back as a spreadsheet file.

Pull out every number with the page it is on. Send it as a spreadsheet.

Deadlines and obligations

Contracts and tenders: who owes what, by when.

List every deadline and obligation: who, what, by when, with clause numbers.

What changed between versions

Send both files, then ask.

Compare these two versions. What was added, removed or reworded?

A checklist from a manual

Setup guides, onboarding docs, safety instructions.

Turn this manual into a checklist I can tick off, in order.

Do something with it

Summary in another language

Read an English report, get the gist in Turkish or Arabic, or the other way round.

Summarise this in Turkish, half a page, keep the numbers as they are.

Questions to ask the author

Before a call with the people who wrote it.

What is weak or unclear in this proposal? Give me the questions I should ask on the call.

A reply draft

The agent drafts the text; you decide what to send.

Draft a reply accepting points 1 to 3 and pushing back on point 4, polite and short.

A printed page

A printed letter or a page of a book: take a photo. The agent reads photos and screenshots too (1.5 M per image).

This is a photo of a letter from my bank. What do they want from me and by when?

What it costs and how to read long files

Text work on the default model costs 1 M per 20,000 tokens, and a photo of a page costs 1.5 M to read. Free gives 200 M in the first month, then 100 M a month. Ask the agent for your balance before and after a big document and you will know the price of that kind of file from then on.

Questions

Which file types can the agent read?

PDF, DOCX and TXT, sent or forwarded in Telegram like any file. It also reads photos and screenshots of pages.

Can it summarise a long PDF?

Yes. A large document is read in parts; ask for a chapter-by-chapter summary when completeness matters. On Pro you can attach Claude or Codex for longer context.

Can it put the figures into a spreadsheet?

Yes. Ask for a table and the agent sends it back as a file in the chat.
